Find the franchise type to suit you

Find the franchise type to suit you

Finding the right franchise for you is the first step in the key to business success. There is no point buying a franchise because you think it will make you money, if you don’t think you could run it successfully or you don’t actually like the nature of the work.

You need to look at your own skills, experiences, preferences and likes to identify the type of franchise that is best for you.

Your experiences and skills

You need to identify what experience and skills you have:

  • What skills do you possess from previous work etc that you can use when looking for the right franchise for you? Have you got good IT skills, sales experience, office admin, accounting, marketing, customer service etc?
  • Have you ever managed staff? This can be important when trying to identify if you would want to buy a franchise that involved managing people or if you would prefer working by yourself.
  • Have you got good administration skills? This is important as many franchises require you to be able to organise your administration. Some may do it for you and others will give you the systems and procedures you require. Some experience would be beneficial.
  • Do you have sales experience? Nearly all franchises involve a level of selling. If you are good at selling and enjoy it, you may want to buy a franchise that is focused around making sales. If you are not good at it, you should look for one that is less sales orientated and/or a franchise that includes extensive sales support from the franchisor; some franchises will get the sales for you.

Where do you want to work?

You need to identify the working environment that you would prefer working in:

  • Do you want to work in retail?
  • Do you want to work in an office?
  • Do you want to work from home?
  • Do you want to be mobile and work mainly from a vehicle?

What do you enjoy doing?

It is not just identifying what you are good at that will help you find the right franchise for you but also what you like doing.

  • Do you enjoy meeting new people face to face?
  • Do you enjoy talking on the phone?
  • Do you enjoy working in a team?
  • Do you enjoy managing people?
  • Do you enjoy selling?
  • Do you enjoy working with numbers?
  • Do you enjoy working with children?
  • Do you enjoy working with pets?
  • Do you enjoy driving?
  • Do you enjoy working with your hands?
  • Do you enjoy being creative?
  • Do you enjoy multi-tasking?
  • Do you enjoy problem solving?

Answering all of the above should help you to paint a picture of what you are good at and like doing, which you should use when researching franchise opportunities.
